What is a hard bounce?

You are looking at your email campaign report and you see that you have had a few hard bounces.

What is a hard bounce?

A hard bounce is where there is a permanent issue with the email address you are trying to send to.

There are a number of reasons for a hard bounce including

  • A typo in the email address
  • The email address no longer exists
  • The email address is incorrect
  • The domain name is misspelt
  • The domain name no longer exists
  • The mail server has blocked you

Smart Messenger automatically removes hard bounces from your contact lists and places them in your suppression list. This means that you don't email them again and you also have a record of all of your hard bounces.

Your email campaign report in Smart Messenger gives you details of all of your bounces so you may wish to contact people to see if you can obtain a new / correct email address for them so they do not miss out on your email campaigns.

In general terms a 'bounce' is where an email has reached your recipients mail server and the mail server has sent a message back to inform you that it hasn't been delivered.

There are a whole range of reasons as to why a bounce occurs. However they are split in to two types of bounce a hard bounce and a soft bounce.

What is a soft bounce?

A soft bounce is where an email address does exist but it has not made it into their inbox.

What is a hard bounce?

A hard bounce is where your recipients email address doesn't exist or if their mail server has blocked you.

Should I do anything when an email bounces?

Smart Messenger automatically handles your bounces so you do not need to worry about sending to email addresses that you now know no longer exist. It is a good idea to keep your own database up to date with this information, you can do this on a campaign by campaign basis by downloading the bounce report or your can do this periodically by downloading your suppression list.

Depending on who you are sending to you may like to keep an eye on which emails are bouncing as if the bounce happens due to a typo a customer could be missing out on your communications! A quick phone call to check their email address can get your messages in front of them.

What is a soft bounce?

So you have a few emails that have soft bounced? What is a soft bounce? You ask yourself. Well a soft bounce is where your email has been received by your recipient's mail server but could not be delivered. A soft bounce is to notify you of a temporary issue.

Why did my email soft bounce?

There are a number of reasons for a soft bounce including:

  • Recipients mail server is down or busy
  • Recipients mailbox is full
  • The message you have sent is too large

What should I do when I get a soft bounce?

Smart Messenger automatically handles bounces for you so there is no immediate need to do anything.

You may wish to consider calling the affected recipient to check all is ok and that they haven't changed their email address to keep your data up to date.

How to get more people reading your email

You have created a fantastic email with a wonderful message just begging to be read. You have sent it to your contacts.... now what?

Wouldn't it be great if some of your contacts forwarded your email to their friends? They may well do this and you will see this in our reporting. But you could get even more people to read your message.

By adding social share links to your email you encourage your contacts to share your email with their friends on their social networks this can significantly increase your readership and may even encourage people to subscribe to your emails.

Example:
If you send Susan an email and she forwards it to her 5 friends who she thinks may be interested that's potentially 5 more people that will see your message. If Susan shares it on her facebook page where she has 200 friends and you only reach 10% of these that's 20 people - 4 times more than she would have forwarded it to.

The social share buttons can be found in the building blocks section of the Drag and Drop editor in your Smart Messenger account

Restore Facility

Don't you just hate it when you forget to save your work and your computer crashes? Or have you ever written a message, saved it and realised that you've accidently deleted some content that you shouldn't have?

With the Smart Messenger restore function we help ease the pain.

The restore function can be found under the 'Utilities' menu, which is found where you edit your campaign. Simply click 'Utilities', then click 'restore' and choose the version you wish to revert to.

We perform regular automatic saves of your message which you can restore back to, however nothing beats a proper manual save so please do save your message regularly.

Add a user to your account

Smart Messenger allows you to give users such as a new team member or a designer their own login to your account. You can also restrict which parts of the system they have access to and whether they can send out campaigns or not.

To set up a new user simply go to the managed users section in the 'My Account' menu (top right), add their details and set their access level.

We celebrate 10 years of Email Marketing

Smart Messenger has provided businesses with an easy, cost effective email marketing solution for the last ten years. In this time the standard monthly fee has never increased. The service however, has grown and developed to keep ahead of clients needs and expectations.

As it is our tenth year of email marketing we thought it would be nice to mark the occasion with some cake! Cake designer Minette from Candii Clouds created a wonderful cake for us. Complete with an iPad, balloons and banner all made from icing! The cake was cut and enjoyed by visitors to the Chamber of Commerce B2B event in March.
